Department of biomaterials, University of Alabama School of Dentistry, Birmingham 35294.
Synthetic materials for surgical implant devices have evolved from the early metallic systems to a variety of material combinations and composites. Current biomaterial and biomechanical properties provide relatively optimal stable bone and soft tissue interfaces and simplified restorative treatments. Further improvements in existing systems require a continuation of the multidisciplinary approach to laboratory, experimental animal, and human clinical research.
