Diagnostic tests may be necessary to determine the cause oforal ulcers. Direct immunofluorescence staining of oral smearssupplies results much more quickly than viral culture, the "goldstandard" for diagnosing HSV lesions. This study compares thesensitivity and specificity of direct immunofluorescence stainingvs. viral culture and evaluates the usefulness of the two techniquesfor the general dental practitioner.
