Dr. Levines comments are well-taken. Prevention always represents a preferable course of action over restoration of damage. Efforts within the profession could be aimed toward finding avenues for the prevention of aging within the oral environment. For many of the 76 million Americans over the age of 50 years, prevention may no longer be an option. Complete diagnosis, followed by functional and restorative therapies, may represent our best strategy for this sector of the population.
