Thanks once again for focusing our membership on the oral health needs of children. The article by Dr. Brown, Mr. Wall and Ms. Lazar ("Trends in Untreated Caries in Primary Teeth of Children 2 to 10 Years Old," January JADA) presents us with the sobering fact that thousands of children "too young to see a dentist," according to the prevailing wisdom of health supervision guidelines, suffer from decay.
I would suggest that the Medicaid system should not be the whipping boy for societys failure to raise caries-free children into their school years. We need to have a national policy that includes a dental visit by a childs first birthday. Until infants have a dental home, infants will have dental caries.
