Editor’s note

Dr. Small’s letter is a good example of the point I tried to make in the editorial: each dentist must make treatment decisions for himself or herself on the basis of experience, evidence and philosophy. Gold foils were a required part of the curriculum when I was a student, but even then they were not in widespread use. The current opinion is not always correct, but I personally would not place a foil today.
