HELP WITH HIPAA
Among the electronic resources available at "www.ada.org/goto/hipaa" are memos from ADA Executive Director Dr. James Bramson on the preparations your Association has taken to prepare its members for HIPAA compliance and a summary of HIPAA privacy guidelines for dentists, as well as ADA commentary on proposed privacy modifications.
Several online presentations address the benefits of electronic transactions, administrative cost cutting under the act and HIPAA disclosure decisions. Youll need Microsofts Excel and PowerPoint applications, as well as Adobe Acrobat Reader to view these presentations.
For breaking news on HIPAA issues, there are links to the very latest coverage from ADA News, including up-to-date information on the Associations HIPAA Privacy Kit and companion seminars. You can download the HIPAA seminar schedules and link to the ADA Product Catalog to order a privacy kit online.
These resources are augmented by a collection of hyperlinks to important HIPAA resources available across the Internet. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, or HHS, Office for Civil Rights Web site, for example, has the latest frequently asked questions on HIPAA and an unofficial version of the combined regulatory text (in portable document format).
Other links point to the HHS Administrative Simplification site, Phoenix Health Systems HIPAAdvisory, the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange Strategic National Implementation Process and Small Practice HIPAA Implementation Guide, and the Georgetown University Health Privacy Project, among others.
If HIPAA is on your mind, find the help you need at "www.ada.org/goto/hipaa".
ONLINE PATIENT EDUCATION
October saw the launch of five new animations in the Public content area aimed at providing patients with basic, useful information on important topics in oral health care. Each of the five narrated animations addresses a single topic, including how teeth develop and appear in the mouth, suggested brushing and flossing techniques, the development of periodontal disease and the process of root canal therapy.
Animations run about 30 seconds, but there are breaks within each one so that patients can move along at their own pace. Some animations include interactive features triggered by dragging the computer cursor over different areas of the presentation to illustrate such concepts as how teeth appear and shed in the mouth.
The animations also are good tools to use in the classroom or operatory to demonstrate proper oral health practices or to explain dental procedures. To view the animations, youll need Macromedias Flash Player Web browser plug-in, which is available free of charge at "www.macromedia.com/downloads".
Do you have questions about your responsibilities in complying with the regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA? ADA.org is a good place to find answers to those questions.
Are you looking for an easy way to get your patients up to speed on the basics of dental health? Send them to ADA.org.
