We appreciate Dr. Scollards valuable input. In our research, we did not assess the esthetic quality of the porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations in terms of shape, translucency, etc. Our research was designed to find whether dentists and patients agreed on the shade match of existing restorations compared to adjacent natural dentition.
We agree with Dr. Scollard that photography is a very valuable tool to record and assess esthetic information. However, this was not the subject of our research.
It will be interesting in the future to measure the agreement of a panel of shade evaluators on the shade match of photographs taken with several shade tabs and to compare them with their selection in the clinical setting.
