Authors’ response

The mucosal changes described by Dr. Hannie are consistent with signs and symptoms of nutritional deficiencies, and are described in the article as including glossitis, angular cheilosis and gingivitis.

At our medical center some patients having such mucosal disease have been successfully treated with a soft reline material placed in their dentures. A strict recall regimen is instituted, and the reline material is replaced on a fairly frequent basis. However, it is rare to see the mucosa fully recover after many years of alcohol abuse.
