We value Dr. Morganos critique of our article. We are in complete agreement with Dr. Morgano regarding the appropriate length and width of posts for restoring endodontically treated teeth.
Our articles main points were to aid the clinician in the early detection of vertical root fractures; we were not advising the reader in post selection or ferrule preparation. Although we illustrated a few poorly selected posts, we did not imply causation between post length and root fracture.
However, we do have a suspicion, based on our clinical experience, that poor post design or length may be a significant risk factor for vertical root fracture, or VRF. We may be able to explore this suspicion in our follow-up article, wherein we will be presenting, with a statistical analysis, a more extensive investigation of 225 VRFs from three different geographic locations.
