My comments, in an editorial about practice styles, certainly evoked lively debate that we welcome in JADA. Over the past 20 years, there have been few controlled studies addressing the safety and efficacy of gold foil restorations; the classic literature indicates pulpal injury can result. That said, I am not advocating replacing a sound, serviceable restoration without cause. Each practitioner must evaluate when to continue with a technique and when to replace it with new technology. This is not an editorial decision, it is an assessment of risk and benefit for the betterment of patient care.
