MUNDANE MODALITIES?

Donald M. Quinn, III, D.D.S.

Bastrop, La.

Has the necessity to publish become such a priority for our educators that they have to create esoteric surveying methods of incredibly mundane treatment modalities ("Teaching Students the Repair of Resin-Based Composite Restorations: A Survey of North American Dental Schools," by Dr. Valeria Gordan and colleagues, March JADA)? Forget the statistics, the graphs and the verbosity—here’s the deal!

  1. When caries is detected, remove it.
  2. If you are certain the caries is eliminated and the remaining resin-based composite, or RBC, is stable and esthetically satisfactory, a repair is indicated.
  3. Otherwise, remove the RBC in toto and restore appropriately.

"Where’s the beef?" Seven pages to describe the obvious—shame! Surely there are better things to do with dental students’ time.
