CYBERNEWS

AMALGAM RESOURCES ONLINE
The Best Management Practices for Amalgam Waste, also known as the BMPs, are a series of amalgam waste handling and disposal practices developed by the ADA to address topics such as bulk mercury collection programs, use of chairside traps and vacuum collection systems, and amalgam recycling and disposal.

The BMP document, which details the Association’s recommendations in a simple do-and-don’t format, is available to download in the Dental Topics A to Z content area of the Dental Professionals section of ADA.org. The document includes a practical guide to integrating BMPs into your practice, a straightforward introduction that covers the most salient issues, an explanation of types of amalgam waste and additional resources. A guide for recycling amalgam waste and important questions to ask amalgam waste recyclers rounds out this resource.

You can download the BMP document either in a basic text format or as a full-color brochure. You’ll need Adobe’s free Acrobat Reader application to view and print the documents; visit "www.adobe.com/products" to download the program.

In October, the Association released a 10-minute, step-by-step video on how to implement BMPs in your dental practice, which also is available online. The video is divided into four sections to facilitate downloading and is available in formats optimized for either a fast broadband Internet connection or slower dial-up access.

The Windows Media Player application, commonly installed on computers running Microsoft’s Windows operating system, is required to view the videos. If you don’t have the application or would like to upgrade your current version of the program, go to "www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia".

In addition to these resources, you’ll also find hyperlinks to articles from JADA and ADA News on amalgam issues, ADA positions and statements on dental amalgam, dental mercury hygiene recommendations and a directory of amalgam recyclers.

"BMPs are the right thing to do," wrote 2003–2004 ADA President Eugene Sekiguchi and Executive Director James B. Bramson in a letter to constituent dental societies announcing the availability of the BMP document. "All dentists should follow BMPs for this very simple reason."

For the latest ADA information on amalgam BMPs, visit "www.ada.org/prof/resources/topics/amalgam_bmp.asp". If you have any questions regarding the ADA’s BMPs, please contact the Division of Science by e-mail at "science{at}ada.org" or by calling 1-312-440-2878. ADA members can use the Association’s toll-free number and ask for Ext. 2878.

EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR ADA.ORG
Earlier this year, the Web Marketing Association recognized ADA.org with a Standard of Excellence award in the organization’s 2004 WebAward Competition.

Web sites entered in the competition were judged on their design, content, use of technology, interactivity, copywriting and ease of use against a standard of excellence established by the judges and against peer Web sites within specific industries.

The Web Marketing Association was founded in 1997 to help set a high standard for Internet marketing and corporate Web development and is made up of Internet marketing, advertising, public relations and design professionals.
