Dr. David A. Nashs January JADA letter to the editor regarding Dr. Roger Levins August and September JADA articles, "The Purpose of a Business" and "Setting Your Practice Goals," respectively, was particularly challenging for me.
As most of us in this profession know, in todays reality of managed care, preferred provider organizations, decreasing dental insurance coverage and increasing costs, providing quality dentistry and running a successful business is more difficult than ever.
By their very nature, the vast majority of dental practices fit the small business model. As everyone knows, the majority of small businesses fail within two years.
If there is one area where dentistry comes up woefully short, it is in educating its practitioners in the skills and knowledge needed to run a successful and efficient small business. Dr. Levin, and others like him, provides an invaluable service by teaching us how to be more profitable, so that we can provide the very best care that dental science has to offer.
