In reading Dr. Jeffcoats March JADA editorial, I find that she seems to be very contradictory in what she has to say. She states that she does not question the competency of the 30 Mexican dentists, and respects the dental schools from which they graduated. She also points out that they will be subject to an exceptional level of scrutiny, both before and while they are here.
But she then goes on to state that substandard care will be delivered in these community health centers by these dentists. I find this to be incredibly arrogant and condescending. Does Dr. Jeffcoat really believe that all dentists who graduate from a U.S. dental school will automatically do better dentistry, especially considering that, once they pass a board exam, they never are subject to any level of scrutiny again?
I feel that California has done a great service to the community by passing this legislation, and that the community health centers should not be looked down upon as substandard.
