I want to thank the readers of The Journal for the lively discussion concerning my recent editorial. Readers, not surprisingly, weighed in on both sides of the issue. One thing is clear: there appears to be consensus concerning the need for health care reform, with a focus on access to care. For the record, the editorial did not malign the education received by dentists beyond U.S. borders. The editorial was simply addressing standards for practice.
Most states require testing, or reciprocity, of U.S.-educated dentists. In my opinion, everyone should undergo the same testing procedures in order to protect the public. If boards are unnecessary, they should be unnecessary for all.
If you do not agree with the current system of testing or licensure, in this country or at home, work to change it with equality for all.
