Author’s response

I thank Dr. Hirschfeld for his insightful comment. Codeine’s efficacy as an analgesic is at best moderate, and the desired analgesic effect may not be obtained in a reduced dosage. Therefore, the recommendation for use of a different opioid analgesic is rational. However, it also must be noted that the perception of pain and the quality of analgesia are, at best, subjective.
