Dr. Weinstock correctly points out that member-dentists have an affirmative obligation under the ADAs Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct, Section 4.C, "to report to the appropriate reviewing agency, as determined by the local component or constituent dental society, instances of gross or continual faulty treatment by other dentists." We couldnt agree more that dentists must be mindful of, and remain ethically committed to, this professional responsibility.
Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate reviewing agency may be a peer-review committee, both ethics and peer-review committees or the dental board. Regrettably, the Council on Ethics, Bylaws and Judicial Affairs has heard recent complaints about unjustified criticism, which is what triggered the June "Ethical Moment." Both issues have bearing on patient welfare and the profession as a whole. We thank Dr. Weinstock for sharing his insights.
