FLUORIDE VARNISH APPLICATION

Drs. Jorge Castillo and Peter Milgrom’s December JADA article, "Fluoride Release From Varnishes in Two In Vitro Protocols," was an interesting sequel to the October 2001 article on the same subject by the same authors.1

The Duraphat 5 percent sodium fluoride varnish (Colgate Palmolive, New York) is an easily applied product, and the goal of remineralization and averting early carious lesions is highly desirable. I have used this on numerous occasions in my office.

However, I find the later protocol of three separate applications in a single week to be impractical from a practitioner’s point of view. It would require three appointments.
