CYBERNEWS

GOOGLE COMES TO ADA.ORG
In sports and in life, there’s some-thing to be said for going with a proven winner.

Take Internet search giant Google, for instance. Since its launch in 1998, Google has grown into one of the most widely used search engines on the Internet. In fact, Google technology was used for more than one-half of all Internet searches conducted in May of this year, according to Nielsen//NetRatings.

So when it came time to revamp the search functionality for the Association’s Web site, the ADA went with a proven winner and earlier this summer launched an ADA.org search engine driven by Google technology.

The new search engine promises easier, faster and more complete searches of ADA.org content and greater relevance of search returns. Visitors who have been using Google to search the Web will recognize the navigation and formatting of search results and the simple user interface.

Advanced search options include searching by exact phrase, page title or URL and sorting of returns by date or relevance. The Google-powered search can find results in Web pages as well as in PDF and Microsoft Office documents posted on ADA.org, and it offers direct searching of much of the information delivered to the site via database, including the ADA Seal, the annual session speaker/program and ADA News article databases.

For guidance on getting the most out of ADA.org’s new and improved search engine, follow the link that says "Search Tips" at the top of the results page from any search. And remember, the search engine is accessible through the navigation bar at the top of any page on ADA.org.

A NEW AND IMPROVED JADA ONLINE
The electronic edition of the best-read journal in dentistry will undergo a major upgrade later this year as the JADA Online portal is migrated to a new hosting company.

The ADA’s Publishing and Information Technology, Standards and Salable Materials divisions are currently working with California-based HighWire Press to develop and launch a new electronic portal for the Association’s flagship publication.

A division of the Stanford University Libraries, HighWire Press currently hosts 866 journals, including 72 of the 200 most frequently cited journals in the world, and it features the largest repository of free full-text life-science articles available online.

By contracting with HighWire, JADA will be taking advantage of some of the most sophisticated technology available in electronic journal publishing. Among the strengths of the HighWire platform are a superior set of search tools and advanced research capabilities, greater flexibility and "user friendliness" and specialized services including e-mail alerts and "toll-free" hyperlinks to other HighWire-hosted journals.

As with the current electronic edition of JADA, ADA members and JADA subscribers always will have complete free access to the entire JADA Online archive. The new portal will include every issue of the journal dating back through 1998 at launch and will be supplemented next spring with all issues from 1995 through 1997.

The new JADA Online portal is slated to go online at the end of this year. Watch this column and ADA.org in the coming months for further details on this exciting new feature.
