E-WASTE UPDATE
Among those presenting testimony was Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), who introduced the bipartisan Electronic Waste Recycling Promotion and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 to the Senate in March with co-sponsor Sen. Jim Talent (R-Mo.). If passed, the legislation would offer electronics manufacturers, retailers, consumers and recyclers tax incentives to recycle their electronic waste, including
an $8 per unit tax credit for companies that recycle at least 5,000 display screens or computer systems per year;
a $15 tax credit for consumers who recycle their old computers and televisions using qualified recyclers.
The bill also contains provisions stipulating how electronic waste is handled and directs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to advise Congress on the feasibility of establishing a nationwide e-waste recycling program.
The next Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) Day, the Associations annual dental advocacy event, is slated for Feb. 3, 2006. If you plan to join your colleagues in providing oral health care services to children from low-income families, you can register for next years event on ADA.org beginning Oct. 1.
Next month, Philadelphia, the nations birthplace and a symbol of Americas heritage and freedom, will host the ADAs 146th annual session. If you cant make it to the Pennsylvania Convention Center, you still can keep up with the proceedings through the ADA News Convention Daily online edition on ADA.org.
The U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Superfund and Waste Management met in late July to hear testimony on the growing problem of electronic waste in the United States. By some estimates, more than 50 million computers are disposed of each year, all containing harmful elements such as lead, cadmium and mercury.
