Response from the ADA’s Council on Scientific Affairs

We’re pleased that our readers find this kind of information useful. We look forward to publishing future evidence-based clinical recommendations developed by the Council on Scientific Affairs on topics of interest to practicing dentists. Staff of the Division of Science advises that these clinical recommendations are based exclusively on scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of professionally applied topical fluoride in preventing caries. The council could not include an analysis of the cost per application and still adhere to the rigorous evidence-based criteria for this type of systematic review. However, we have shared Dr. Shaffer’s suggestion with the Council on Dental Practice for its consideration.
