I read with interest Dr. James Antoons "Ethical Moment" column in May JADA, "May I List My Nonhealth Degree in Advertisements?" (
JADA 2006;137:670[Free Full Text]
). I was not aware that this is discouraged in the ADAs Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct.
However, I believe further clarification is needed in determining what is considered a "health" degree. For example, I earned a masters degree in biology before attending dental school. This degree furthered my understanding of the processes of all living organisms including humans.
In addition, I believe it was instrumental in providing me with credentials that aided in my acceptance into professional school. As such, I often list my title as Wayne Maibaum, MA, DMD. Does this meet with the ethical standards described by Dr. Antoon in his column?
