I thought Dr. Michael Glicks November JADA editorial, "Opprobrium or Opportunity,"1 was especially prescient, given the accompanying "special supplement"2 financed by the makers of Listerine.
While I agree that "conflicts of interest do not necessarily equate to moral or ethical failings," they cant help but call into question the reliability of the information presented. If JADA makes any pretense to being an authoritative source of information, its separate section on antimicrobial mouthrinses, which offers continuing "education" credits, subverts that goal.
Perhaps Im being a bit naive, but the pervasiveness of industry influence in ostensibly unbiased journals just seems wrong, even if there is full disclosure. Perhaps instead of labeling the Listerine section a "special supplement," it might have been labeled "special advertising supplement."
