TEACHING DENTISTS ABOUT MEDICINE

I was very impressed with Dr. Bruce Baum’s January JADA article, "Inadequate Training In the Biological Sciences and Medicine for Dental Students: An Impending Crisis for Dentistry" ( JADA 2007; 138[1]:16–25 ), on the need for more emphasis on medical problems in dentistry at dental schools. I teach dental students and dental hygiene students during part of my work week. When a student comes up to me with the patient’s medical history, I show him or her how to zero in on what drugs, and which systemic diseases, will directly affect what we are going to do for this patient.

There are several excellent books and recent articles16 currently out there that tell the dentist and dental student specifically what to do with medically complex patients. The combination of reading these books and journals, and having clinical faculty go over every complex medical history with the student right there in the teaching clinic, will push the student’s learning curve up rapidly.
