THE STATE OF CRIME ONLINE
While the number of Internet fraud complaints filed with the federal Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) declined in 2006, the total dollar value of losses reported climbed nearly 10 percent.

Last year, the IC3 received 207,492 complaints. They included many different types of fraud—such as auction, nondelivery and credit card fraud—as well as complaints about nonfraudulent activity such as computer intrusions, unsolicited e-mail and child pornography. Overall, the number of complaints was down some 10 percent from the previous year after having grown substantially each year since 2000.

Of all the fraud complaints filed with the IC3 in 2006, more than 90 percent involved a monetary loss on the victim’s part. In all, the agency reported, losses in 2006 totaled more than $198 million, with a median loss per complaint of $724.

The IC3 also noted "recent high activity" associated with a number of types of complaints including counterfeit checking scams and "phishing" scams that use phony Web sites to collect passwords, account numbers and other sensitive information.

The IC3’s full report on Internet crime in 2006 is available at "www.ic3.gov/media/annualreports.aspx". The report includes an appendix of best practices to prevent Internet crime as well as steps victims can take to file complaints. The agency also hosts a Web site with industry partners aimed at educating consumers about online crime; visit "www.lookstoogoodtobetrue.com".

The IC3 is a joint project of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National White Collar Crime Center.
