To paraphrase Dr. Gordon Christensen in his March JADA article, "Dealing With the Increasing Need for Continuing Education" (
JADA 2007;138[3]: 38790[Free Full Text]
), dental schools do not prepare graduates adequately for all areas of practice owing to the large quantity of information present in dentistry. His solution, and rightly so, is intensive and ongoing continuing education.
However, as I read his conclusions, it also is apparent that the first and best way to close this "gap" in learning would be to mandate a one-year residency, a postgraduate year one, as exists now in advanced education in general dentistry or general practice residency programs, or some other modality. The point here is initial competency, and the obvious lack of time to adequately train the new graduate in all areas of dentistry.
