ADA RELEASES 2007 PODCAST SERIES
Based on the success of its pilot program in 2006, the American Dental Association is featuring a new collection of podcasts covering topics of interest to practitioners and, in particular, new dentists.

Podcasting is the distribution of multimedia content such as audio programs over the Internet using Really Simple Syndication (RSS).

The 2007 podcasts feature these speakers and topics:

– Dr. Irvin Kaw, "Kellogg Executive Management Program for Dentists";
– Mary Byers, "Be a Great Boss";
Dr. Bill Crounse, "Important Healthcare Trends";
– Dr. Larry Emmott, "Technology" (two parts);
– David Catalano, "Cash Flow" and "Managing Your Debt";
– Lee Ann Brady, "Team Development" (two parts).

Podcasts will be released every three to four weeks throughout the remainder of 2007. Listeners can subscribe to podcasts to receive future titles automatically, listen to them directly from ADA.org or save them for later listening using a personal computer or digital media player.

SECURING YOUR WEB BROWSER
The CERT Program at Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute, which focuses on the security of large, networked computer systems like the Internet, last year released a report titled "Securing Your Web Browser" that advises home computer users and others with limited technical support as to how to protect their systems from online attacks.

"Often, the Web browser that comes with an operating system is not set up in a secure default configuration," the CERT report says. "Not securing your Web browser can lead quickly to a variety of computer problems caused by anything from spyware being installed without your knowledge to intruders taking control of your computer."

The report starts with an overview of many of the technologies associated with Web browsers, such as ActiveX, Java, Javascript and cookies, that can be exploited by hackers, viruses or other forms of attack. While some of this terminology may be familiar, the report provides clear explanations of how each technology can be exploited by attackers.

The bulk of the report focuses on the specific steps users should take to ensure their Web browsers are as secure as possible. Guidance is provided for Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari browsers. For each browser, detailed instructions are provided for setting privacy, download, scripting, cookie and other options.

The report concludes with a listing of helpful online references on topics such as network security, spyware, phishing schemes and other Internet issues as well as security information specific to the Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems.
