SOFTWARE PIRACY
That finding comes from an annual report on global software piracy released by the Business Software Alliance (BSA), an organization representing commercial software publishers.
According to the BSA, for every $2 worth of software purchased legally worldwide, a dollars worth was obtained illegally. With a projected $350 billion spent on PC software over the next four years, more than $180 billion in software will be pirated, the BSA report predicted.
Of all the countries studied, the United States had the lowest rate of piracy, at 21 percent; however, it also had the greatest total losses due to software fraud, at some $7.3 billion. Emerging countries in Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa accounted for about one-third of all PC hardware shipments but just 10 percent of spending on software purchased through legal channels.
The BSA study, now in its fourth year, was conducted independently by information technology market research and forecasting firm IDC.
If you have not been to ADA.org lately to find information about the American Dental Associations advocacy activities and initiatives, you have not had the opportunity to see the new and improved advocacy content area launched in April.
Did you know that ADA members can receive electronic copies of dental journal articles from the ADA Library via e-mail? Most requests are processed within two days for a fee of $7 per article.
Approximately 35 percent of all the software installed on personal computers (PCs) worldwide in 2006 was obtained illegally, accounting for nearly $40 billion in losses for the global software industry.
