EVIDENCE-BASED DENTISTRY ONLINE RESOURCE
June marked the launch of an enhanced evidence-based dentistry (EBD) content area on ADA.org that provides dentists with a central resource for information they can use in clinical decision making.

The new EBD content area brings together a searchable directory of systematic reviews and additional resources on this emerging topic in dentistry. A topical list provides links to abstracts of systematic reviews on oral health topics—including links to the full text of systematic reviews published in The Journal of the American Dental Association, as well as links to summaries of systematic reviews developed by other organizations.

Additional resources include links to organizations, journals and online databases related to evidence-based medicine; tutorials on EBD; and clinical literature searches. The EBD resources are rounded out by the ADA’s evidence-based clinical recommendations on professionally applied topical fluoride and a glossary of EBD terms.

This is just the first phase in developing additional resources to assist dentists in clinical decision making. Thanks to a grant from the National Library of Medicine and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, the ADA will continue to enhance EBD resources on ADA.org. Future plans for the EBD resources that will be funded by the grant include critical summaries of systematic reviews developed by experts in the field and information for patients and the general public.

DENTAL INFORMATICS COMMITTEE SEEKS VOLUNTEERS
The ADA Standards Committee on Dental Informatics (SCDI) is seeking volunteers for a work group to develop guidelines for computer hardware and software in the dental practice.

The report the work group will develop—Proposed ADA Technical Report No. 1055 for Guidelines for Hardware and Software in Dental Practice—will provide an updated, comprehensive document for dentists to use when evaluating or purchasing electronic equipment. The report will identify characteristics of software and hardware that meet the particular needs of dental practices and describe those characteristics in nontechnical language.

"Think of the report as a sort of buyers’ guide to mak[ing] informed decisions about what to buy and how to maintain it," said Dr. Gregory G. Zeller, vice-chair of the SCDI. "We’re going to keep it real, focus on things that relate to dental providers."

The volunteers for whom SCDI is looking to participate in this work project include interested private practitioners, software vendors and dental device manufacturers, and electronic claims experts, among others.

For information on participating in the work group, contact Paul Bralower at 1-312-440-2500, Ext. 4129. Additional information about the work done by ADA standards committees is available at "www.ada.org/prof/resources/standards/index.asp". ADA standards are available for purchase through the ADA Catalog at "www.adacatalog.org".
