ORTHODONTIC OMISSION

I noted an obvious omission in the October JADA "For the Dental Patient" feature, "Gingival Recession: Causes and Treatment" ( JADA 2007; 138[10]:1404[Free Full Text] ). The article correctly stated that "one of the main causes of gingival recession is an irregular or abnormal tooth position." The recommended treatment options were limited to modification of aggressive toothbrushing, soft-tissue grafts and periodontal treatment, omitting orthodontic treatment as the most effective means of correcting abnormal tooth position. Without correcting the underlying problem of poor tooth position, the other treatments will have a guarded prognosis.
