Response from the ADA Division of Legal Affairs

The American Dental Association participated in the development of the new infective endocarditis guidelines from the American Heart Association, and has approved those portions relevant to dentistry. The guidelines also were endorsed by the Infectious Diseases Society of America and by the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. It is impossible to make recommendations for every conceivable clinical situation, however, which is why the American Dental Association recommends that dentists use their professional judgment. In so doing, practitioners should be mindful that the guidelines may well be cited as some evidence of the prevailing standard of care in any ensuing dispute.
